A silent threat to your health

In the heart of Pakistan’s public health crisis lies a hidden yet deadly enemy: Hepatitis C. This dangerous virus silently attacks the liver, often without warning. By the time symptoms appear, irreversible damage may already have occurred.

Did you know?

  • A person dies from a hepatitis-related illness every 30 seconds.
  • Pakistan has the highest prevalence of hepatitis C in the world.

The power of early detection

Hepatitis C spreads through blood and bodily fluids, often transmitted via contaminated needles, razors, medical instruments, or unsterilized equipment. But the good news?

Hepatitis C is preventable and treatable.

Early detection through regular screenings is the key to fighting this silent killer. Timely testing saves lives.

Join the movement:

What is Hepatitis C?

Frequently Asked Questions

The only way to confirm if you have Hepatitis C is through a blood test. The Anti-HCV test detects antibodies against the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) in your blood. If the test is positive, it means you've been exposed to the virus at some point, but further testing (like PCR or RNA test) is needed to determine if the infection is active.

The Anti-HCV (Hepatitis C antibody) test is a blood test used to screen for Hepatitis C infection. It detects antibodies your body produces in response to the virus. A positive result means you have been exposed to the virus, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you have an active infection. Further tests are required to determine if the infection is current or if it was a past infection.

A positive Anti-HCV test result indicates that you’ve been exposed to the Hepatitis C virus at some point. However, it doesn’t confirm an active infection. Your doctor will likely recommend a HCV PCR test (Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR test) to determine if the virus is still in your blood and if you need treatment.

Yes, Hepatitis C can be cured with modern antiviral treatments. Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications have made it possible to cure most people with Hepatitis C, often in as little as 8 to 12 weeks of treatment, depending on the type and stage of the infection.

It’s recommended to get tested if you:

  • Have a history of injection drug use
  • Received a blood transfusion or organ transplant
  • Have been exposed to unsterile needles or equipment (e.g., tattoos, piercings, dental treatments, barber blades)
  • Are at risk of blood exposure in healthcare settings
  • Have liver disease or abnormal liver tests
  • The Anti-HCV test is highly accurate, but it is a screening test. A positive result does not mean you definitely have an active infection; further testing, like the HCV PCR test, is required to confirm an active infection. False negative results are rare but can occur in the early stages of infection or if the immune system doesn’t produce enough antibodies.

If your Anti-HCV test is positive, don’t panic. A positive result means you’ve been exposed to the virus, but further tests are needed to determine whether you have an active infection. Your doctor will guide you through the next steps, including additional blood tests and possibly a liver biopsy or imaging tests to assess the extent of liver damage.

If you're at risk of Hepatitis C (e.g., if you've had exposure to contaminated blood), regular testing is important. For people who have already been diagnosed and treated, your doctor will determine how often you need to be tested for viral clearance and liver health.

Yes, Hepatitis C primarily affects the liver. Over time, the virus can cause liver inflammation, leading to liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even liver failure if not treated. Early detection and treatment can prevent serious liver complications.
